The Chairman of the Laxey Regeneration Committee is encouraging people to try out the village’s new link bus service.
 
Steve Rodan SHK has welcomed a positive initial response to the hop-on/hop-off service, but says there is scope to accommodate more passengers.
 
The link bus, operated by Tours (IoM), was introduced on June 11 on a four-week trial basis. It provides a provide a convenient connection between the upper and lower parts of the village via a route which takes in the Promenade, Woollen Mills, Tram Station, Heritage Shop, Cornmill and Great Laxey Wheel.
 
The idea for a link bus was first raised during the public consultation about the village regeneration proposals, and the Regeneration Committee, Commissioners, Manx National Heritage and Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust have all been keen to make it a reality.
 
The aim is to provide an economic boost to businesses in Laxey by encouraging people to spend more time in the area.
 
Tours (IoM) has welcomed the opportunity to work alongside the community, and develop a bus timetable and fare structure aimed at attracting visitors and local residents.
Passenger numbers on the 15-seater bus have been steady to date, with peaks occurring following the arrival of coaches and trams in the village.
 
The Commissioners are welcoming feedback on the service and will take on board any comments and helpful ideas. Among the suggestions received so far are the possibility of a single journey fare aimed at residents who only need a lift back home from the village with shopping, and improving signage for the bus.
 
Mr Rodan said: ‘The link bus is attracting lots of passengers, but it could take more. We want as many people as possible to try it out and give me or the Commissioners comments about how it is working for them and whether we should continue.’
 
Linda McCauley, Regeneration Manager, added: ‘More people travelling around Laxey is great news for Laxey businesses. Regeneration is all about making more of the economy, sometimes through environmental improvements and sometimes through getting people from one end of a village to another so they enjoy and support the local area.’
