Manx National Heritage announces Charles Dickens’ London lecture

by isleofman.com 25th October 2012

The second lecture of the Manx National Heritage Winter Lecture Programme welcomes Professor Andrew Sanders, who will be lecturing on the captivating subject of Charles Dickens’ London to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the novelist's birth. The lecture also marks the 23rd annual joint lecture in partnership with the Isle of Man Victorian Society.
Professor Sanders has published widely on Charles Dicken and states,

“That like his character, David Copperfield, Dickens lived his life and pursued his career 'thoroughly in earnest', but he was also a great comic writer whose work resonates well beyond his own age and continues to be recontextualised on the stage, on film, and on television."

Professor Sanders will explore the architecture and life of London in the time of Dickens through a series of images; most of them part of a collection of Victorian photographs relating to places and people in the novelist’s life and writing.

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage said,

“We are delighted that the IOM Victorian Society has invited Professor Sanders to lecture on Dickens’ life in London’.   I look forward to learning more of the Victorian photographic archive which Professor Sanders will be presenting in his illustrated lecture, to unlock the people and places that have contributed to the Dickens’ life and works.”

Peter Kelly of the IOM Victorian Society commented,

"Most people don't realise the link this great author had with the Isle of Man, which hopefully will come to light during the course of Andrew's presentation."

The lecture will be hosted at the Manx Museum on Saturday 27th October at 2.30pm (doors open at 2pm) and admission is free.
