Supporting
The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK
On Friday 15 July 2011
A Golf Day in memory of the only England football captain to ever lift the Jules Rimet trophy will be played on the Isle of Man on 15 July 2011.
Bobby Moore was a footballer who simply oozed class and always epitomised a player in peak physical condition, so it came as something of a shock when in February 1993, it was announced he had cancer, having undergone an operation for cancer of the colon almost two years previously. Two days later, he was at Wembley commentating on the England – San Marino match. A week later, on 24 February, he died from Bowel Cancer, aged just 51 years.
This event is a fund-raiser for The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, and will be attended by celebrities including gold medallist Kriss Akabusi MBE and former England and Watford footballer, Luther Blissett as well as Bobby’s widow, Stephanie Moore MBE.
Isle of Man resident and personal friend of Bobby and Stephanie’s, Lars T. Ugland, has been inspired to support the tremendous work of the Fund. He has put together a committee tasked with holding a Celebrity Golf Day and dinner befitting the England legend.
Lars comments:
“I used to know Bobby and played against him a few times. I have a photo of the two of us (see attached). I used to be the Norwegian Football Association UK representative.
I often asked Bobby to speak at functions or just meet football people, particularly from Norway. He was always positive. I had no idea he was dying of bowel cancer. He told nobody and I only knew the week before he died. I met Stephanie after Bobby died when she first started The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.
I was and still am so impressed with what she has achieved over these years. She raises some ? 2 million a year for the fund. This money goes directly to cancer research and the results obtained are extraordinary. No one deserves support more than Stephanie and the Bobby Moore cancer fund in my opinion. She is an extraordinary person and I feel privileged to be able to call her my friend”.
The cost for a team entry is ?1000 for four and includes the 18holes of golf and dinner as well as host of value added benefits. Additionally, there are a number of opportunities for participants and others, to become involved in sponsorship.
The full Golf Day and dinner package is attached to this email.
Prizes include the opportunity to bid for some money-can’t-buy auction prizes –
including a child’s mascot place as well as Bobby Moore Club tickets to watch England at Wembley, and a selection of football related memorabilia.
By supporting this Golf Day you will be making a significant contribution to scientific research of Bowel Cancer.
The Golf Day and dinner will take place on Friday 15 July 2011 at the Mount Murray Hotel & Country Club in Santon.
