Paul has recently won a competition in the UK's best-selling magazine for writers.
He impressed the judges in Writing Magazine's 1,000 word fiction contest for 2015, after submitting a short story with a 'chilling last-minute twist'.
Baby Blue Eyes tells the tale of what happens one night when a young mother takes her son to bed.
The story has been published online at the magazine's website and will be published in an upcoming edition of Writing Magazine.
The judges commented: 'Winner Paul Speller presents us with a single scene of tenderness between mother and child, letting the back-story emerge slowly through the reflections of our close third-person viewpoint character.
'Zooming in like this allows Paul the luxury of revelling in the details that colour the character of our unnamed mother so effectively, but also masking the clues, peppered throughout, to the chilling last-minute twist.'
Paul, 44, of Douglas, is a freelance journalist and PR services provider. He writes a column in the monthly magazine Money Media and was previously news editor of Isle of Man Newspapers.
He said: 'This was the first time I'd submitted anything fictional to a contest, so I was delighted to hear that the story had won.'
Writing Magazine sells about 22,000 copies monthly and estimates a readership of 66,000.
