IOM Steam Railway Supporters Association

by isleofman.com 12th May 2022

The Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters Association was founded in 1966 to examine the possibility of reopening the Isle of Man Steam Railway, but following its reopening in 1967 by Lord Ailsa and later by the original Railway Company, its activities included voluntary work on the railway, publicity, donations for specific railway projects and the operation of a souvenir shop at Douglas Station. However, following the purchase of the Steam Railway by the Manx Government in 1977, the activities of the Association diminished although maintaining a 'watchdog' role to ensure its continued operation at a reasonable cost to the taxpayer.

During 1982 the Association began the ambitious project of the restoration of the Groudle Glen Railway which continues to this day.

In 1994, the Association completed two projects on the Steam Railway with the cosmetic restoration of locomotive No.6 Peveril and providing new water tanks for No.15 Caledonian.

And in 1998 the "Un-Loch Your Cash" appeal resulted the return to service of one of the original locomotives from 1874.

Join the Association to help support their initiatives and also get free entry to the railway museum in Port Erin and free rides on the Groudle Glen Railways
