Walking buses could be part of Active Travel Strategy

Work is underway to encourage more children to actively travel to school.

That's the message from Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer who was quizzed on active travel in Tynwald this week.

MLC Kerry Sharpe wanted to know what plans his department has to encourage active travel to school and whether walking buses were being considered.

Mr Harmer said the Active Travel Strategy is being developed in collaboration with a number of government departments.

He told Tynwald: "As part of the preparation of the action plan the department will consider how to encourage active travel choices for pupils and students in all of the Island's schools and University College Isle of Man.

"A range of options will be considered such as the creation of a walking bus to school.

"We are working with new partners and we will consider these options against those that have been successfully introduced and maintained elsewhere, as well as learn from best practice."
