Isle of Man Archery Report - 12th November

by Barbara Harris

A small group of archers met at the Onchan Hub on Remembrance Sunday. The eight club members who turned up stood in silence with heads bowed at 11 o’clock to commemorate those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. The round of the day was a Vegas, a round that has not been shot competitively at the club for several years. The Vegas is a triple faced target of the same size as the WA18, but the faces are arranged in a triangular formation and have to shot in a specific order. This provides the archer with a unique challenge and scoring highly can be difficult.

In the Gents Compound division Pete Mumford faced off against Dave and Rhys Moore. After a slow start to the indoor season Rhys has gathered momentum, breaking club records on a weekly basis and this Sunday was no exception. He added 4 points to his pb and broke the Club Record, previously held by Adrian Bruce since 2008, by 1 point. Going on to shoot in the afternoon Rhys also set a New Club Record for the double round. The fight was really for second place but Pete Mumford was never under any pressure from an under-rehearsed Dave Moore.

Lone Lady Compound archer Joy Gough put in a consistent performance but whilst she rarely strayed into the red she could not find the 10 often enough and finished some way down on her pb.

In the Gents Recurve division Eric Lutes, who turned up in the morning session, was up against Dave Berry and David Smith who both shot in the afternoon. It was hardly surprising that the round was won by the more experienced Dave Berry aided by a sugar rush from the doughnuts provided by the Records Officer. It was a very close run thing for second place between Eric and David, with David having the advantage over the first two dozen but ultimately finishing just 6 points behind Eric. Both men were shooting the round for the first time and so recorded personal best scores.

Barbara Harris struggled with her form on Sunday and was disappointed to finish almost 50 points down on her pb. She took some comfort from the fact that her final total was the highest Recurve Vegas score of the day but with the Indoor Nationals looming she needs to find some inspiration quickly.

The Juniors who turned up in the afternoon session were given a Portsmouth 3 spot to shoot. Of the four, Jacob Brookes, Nathan Kinrade, Toby Young and Tilly Ashton, only Tilly had shot the round before. Tilly never seemed to get into a groove on Sunday and she finished well down on her pb. Toby continued his run of form, taking the win by a comfortable margin from Jacob with Nathan in third.

Lesley Sleight elected to shoot a Barebow Portsmouth 3 spot alongside the Juniors.

Also shooting were James and Bethany Aldridge who shot a Portsmouth round as they work their way towards a handicap. James added 51 points to his pb for the round.

The Club held the Annual Outdoor Prize Presentation on Friday night at the Cat with No Tail. We would like to thank Dave Berry for organising the event, the Cat for providing the catering and the Steam Packet Company for their generous contribution to the raffle prizes.

Well done to all those who were awarded trophies; it was nice to see some new faces among the recipients.
