Douglas North member, Mr Ashford, asked the Minister for Economic Development in the House of Keys Sitting yesterday why the TT logos registered under trademark UK2428935 and classic TT logo registered under trademark UK3000398 are not also trademarked in Europe?
Laurence Skelly replied; "The TT logos referred to were registered in 2006 by the then Department of Tourism & Leisure.
"At that time there would have been a stronger case to register the trade marks in the UK than Europe.
"Subsequently, increased commercial use of the TT brand allied to increased media coverage has promoted both the TT and the Island to a greater worldwide audience and market than ever before, therefore the more recent TT brands have had registration extended into Europe.
"Turning to the Classic TT, this was registered in 2013. At that time there was strong evidence of use in the UK and little in Europe and the decision was taken not to register the trademark more widely.
"The Department has in the last couple of weeks, taken the decision to register the Classic TT and the earlier Logo in 12 European classes after analysis of the potential growth in the event and usage of the brand."
